Upon arrival at Rachel's home we were welcomed by herself and two of her friends, one of whom would be sharing the evening's seance with us. We had first met Rachel a few years ago when she was invited to sit as a guest within the Bristol Spirit Lodge Circle, and it was really good to see her again.

After a welcoming chat and a cup of tea, Chris was shown into the upstairs seance room, which she was invited to search. The room was smaller than the Bristol Spirit Lodge, but the comfortable environment was equally pleasing. In one corner there was a spirit cabinet practically contrived from a simple plain black curtain suspended from a curtain wire fastened to the ceiling. A harp stood in the opposite corner. There were three chairs placed ready for the sitters. Two of these were positioned approximately 3ft from the cabinet (which held Rachel's chair) with the third placed centrally behind them. All three witnesses had a clear view of the cabinet. A red globe light was wired upon the ceiling, and a dimmer control switch was on the wall beside the door. Other curtains, to effect blackout, covered both the window and the entrance door to the room. Total blackout was tested prior to sitting.

Before the opening of the seance Rachel's friend placed a simple digital recorder on a ledge above the window. The seance was then opened with a prayer, and red lighting conditions were set. A period of blackout was later experienced, followed by a further period within red light. Throughout the seance all sitters remained seated; although Alan was called upon to make a couple of adjustments to the lighting he was otherwise seated for the duration. The seance lasted for two hours, during which time all three sitters witnessed transfiguration phenomena. Rachel, seated within the cabinet, appeared to be either fully aware; or perhaps experiencing a light trance state.

During the evening, besides transfiguration, all three witnesses also saw some energy-related phenomena within the room, particularly in blackout conditions, when clouds of energy were clearly seen. Both Chris and Rachel's friend experienced coldness to their legs at various times. At one time the red light dimmed, and twice there were small 'tap' sounds upon the radiator...but these were hard to define as being spirit related. As is often the case within seance, as much remains unknown as becomes confirmed. In all it appeared to be a quieter evening than Rachel and her friend had hoped for, but the seance was nevertheless an enjoyable experience for all.

After the final prayer and seance closure Rachel spent some time demonstrating the software she uses to access and study the evidential recordings gathered from the digital recorder that had been placed above the window in the seance room. The examination of such recordings is a lengthy process and currently we do not know what, if anything, was discovered during this evening's seance.

Having satisfied our curiosity through enquiry, we moved back downstairs for the shared enjoyment of tea and chocolate cake, before Chris and Alan left for their journey home.

THOUGHTS: So...what is going on?

I, Chris, founded the Bristol Spirit Lodge Circle three years ago, with the Intent to support the development and demonstration of Physical Phenomena. My interest was, and is, centred around the development of a Medium, howsoever that may become achieved...and through this medium to gather evidence of continuing life. I enjoy all aspects of such development and experimentation. Trance mediumship, with it's various complex presentations fascinates me. Channelled communication, energy clouds, spirit lights, direct voice and materialisation all gain the focus of my attention. EVP (electronic voice phenomena) has never interested me...but...now...I wonder what is going on? I certainly feel sufficiently curious to want to learn more about it.

Rachel's integrity is without question. Her work, like my own, is focussed upon her chosen area of interest.

She has spent several years of her time and funding in order to investigate EVP.

So...what are the facts, as presented by Rachel?

She has told us that a simple recording device (such as the Olympus VN-2100) which is readily available from Argos (for instance) is all that she requires. Along with http://audacity.download-latest.com/, which is the freely available software she uses to study her gathered recordings. Rachel travels widely, and within most olde worlde buildings visited, she receives relevant material simply recorded.

EVP REPORT

After sitting in séance with The Furzey Hill Circle on March 20th I returned home with Alan. Neither of us had much to say about the séance, aside from the fact that we felt some interest in what may or may not have occurred with regard to EVP. Until we received a copy of the recordings received, if there were any, it was difficult to form a reasoned opinion.

Rachel then kindly sent me a CD of the EVP recordings from the seance. The CD arrived on April 1st and I couldn't wait to hear it!

With the CD running I sat with my headphones on, with the volume up loader than usual. I did not know what to expect. I was relaxed and there was no-one in the house with me. I determined to listen objectively.

Rachel felt that one of the recordings sounded like “Go through your arm”. It certainly did sound like ‘Go through your arm”. However, I was unimpressed. The recording was not, to me, particularly clear, and the mind plays tricks. Call me sceptical if you like...

Another recording Rachel said sounded like “We’re marching on”. However…the sitters were chatting about the facial presentations we could all see at that time. I felt it likely that the voice was Rachel’s own in fact, and that she was referring to the progress being made. Rachel has since commented that this phrase is not one that she does habitually uses.

Therefore, at this stage of listening, I remained unimpressed by the EVP recordings.

Another recording was described as ‘Watch him girl, he’s there’. However, I felt this to be Alan’s voice, distorted and misunderstood. My scepticism remained apparent.

Several other recordings were not clear enough for me to make any judgement at all…particularly as sitters were talking at the time.

However…despite all this…I felt a shock of interest in 3 recordings. Upon repeatedly re-playing them…I remain puzzled. I hear them quite clearly and I cannot explain them.

I will therefore refrain from further analysis and offer these recordings for others to hear:

FINALLY: I played the recordings to a group of interested friends. One of them was clearly interested in what he heard. The puzzle remains. I remain sufficiently interested in the three recordings that 'shocked' me to want to find out more about EVP. I will run the recorder within our own seance next Tuesday evening and invite Spirit participation.
